TIPS FROM "THE ILLUSIONIST" LISA PERRY
In my constant research to understand the struggle of hairloss in women, especially women of color, I have found that most medications we take have hair loss side affects. The severity of drug induced hair loss may vary depending on the type of drug, dosage, and sensitivity to that drug. Medications can lead to two types of hairloss and to simplify this, I will put it in two groups without the scientific mumbo-jumbo :-). Anagen Loss and Telogen Loss.
Just so you know, there are three different stages of hair growth: Anagen (active growth) Catagen (transition stage) and Telogen (resting stage). Most drug related loss called "Effluvium" occurs during the Anagen and Telogen stage. Telogen effluvium is the most common and it will start around 2 To 4 months after you start taking the meds. You will start a shedding process of 100-150 strands per day and your hair will become extremely dry and coarse to the touch. This can happen with anesthesia drugs they give you for dental work and non invasive procedures as well. Anagen effluvium occurs when hairs are actively growing. This hairloss is common with people who are taking chemotherapy treatments and is very severe. Total hair loss is experienced at this time.
Hair Loss Medication List (Not all, but those that matter)
Acne medications containing retinoids
Antibiotics and anti fungal drugs
Anti-depressants
Birth control pills
Cholesterol lowering drugs
Drugs that treat breast cancer
High Blood Pressure drugs
Hormone replacement (hot flash drugs)
Thyroid drugs
Weight loss drugs
High blood pressure meds
The good news is you can speak to your doctor about your medication and have it adjusted or changed. My hope is you don't have to take it anymore because you have changed your diet and lifestyle :-). Ladies please get your thyroid tested because this is one of the main culprits. There are many reason that you may loose your hair, this is just one we can work together to remove from your list.
